The substrate industry in Europe is undergoing a fundamental change. The most important raw material, peat, is increasingly being replaced by alternative raw materials. Klasmann-Deilmann is therefore investing in new production facilities and resources as well as in intensive research and development. Klasmann-Deilmann will once again be exhibiting at IPM 2024 and the company’s presence will be characterised by many new product solutions. This is where our innovation potential meets our expertise in growing media and alternative raw materials. As in the past, you will find us in Hall 2.0, Stand D17.
News at the IPM 2024
Substrate safety for growing media:
High-quality and constantly available raw materials are the essential base for crop safety of substrates. Klasmann-Deilmann uses its decades of expertise with alternative raw materials to develop the optimum substrate mixture for every application from the wide variety of raw materials, even with reduced peat content.
Last year, Klasmann-Deilmann used more than 900,000 m³ of alternative raw materials in growing media worldwide. In particular, GreenFibre® wood fibre, TerrAktiv® green compost, perlite, bark and coco materials as well as the first new own developed constituents. This is an enormous amount in the substrate sector and makes Klasmann-Deilmann a leading player in peat alternatives. We will continue to steadily increase these volumes in the coming years. By the end of 2025, 30% of our international annual production should consist of alternative substrate components.
To this end, we are currently securing new raw material resources, modernising our factories and optimising our storage space. To this end, we are also increasingly focusing on close partnerships with European partner companies. One example of this is our joint venture with Olde Bolhaar Eco Service, which specialises in wood raw materials and compost and thus contributes to securing our resources.
In addition to our own product development, we are also an industrial partner in important research projects in Germany, France and the UK, among others, which focus on the practical use of alternative raw materials in substrates.
We know how to do it and will be demonstrating it at IPM ‘24. We continue to be a reliable partner in the development and use of new substrates and alternative raw materials. Our customers can be rest assured that they will always receive premium growing media with the highest level of cultivation safety from us.
Modern peat-reduced and peat-free substrates:
At IPM, we will be presenting modern substrate solutions from our new ‘ADVANCED Substrates’ product line. These are based on a proportion of 40 to 100 % alternative raw materials and cause 20 % to 80 % fewer emissions. At our booth, we will be demonstrating some already tried-and-tested substrate solutions for soft fruit, bedding plants and pot plants such as poinsettia and cyclamen.
In addition to reduced proportions of peat from responsibly managed, RPP-certified sources, we rely on renewable raw materials from natural material cycles, such as wood, green compost, cocos, bark, etc. As some of the raw materials are lighter, CO2 emissions can be reduced by optimising the load during transport. This also represents tangible progress in terms of climate protection and the carbon footprint of horticultural businesses.
Growbag ADVANCED – the new development for vegetables and strawberries
What does today’s commercial horticulture need for the successful cultivation of tomorrow’s vegetables
and strawberries? A high degree of sustainability through the use of renewable, regional raw materials, simple implementation in the existing crop management, strong and healthy root development, high and reliable yields, good year-round availability and – last but not least – lower CO2 emissions. All these requirements are now met: with the new Growbag ADVANCED.
With a completely new raw material mixture based on wood raw materials and only a very low proportion of coir pith, the Growbag ADVANCED offers many advantages for modern production. Take a closer look at our innovative growbags at our stand.
Now everything from a single source: Coco products from Klasmann-Deilmann
Klasmann-Deilmann has direct and exclusive access to coco raw materials in India and Sri Lanka as well as two production sites. This means that a complete portfolio of coco products is available: In addition to our coco growbags, also compressed 5 kg blocks, easy-fill open bags, planter blocks in different dimensions are available. This means that, in addition to growing media, new specialised product solutions are also available from a single source from Klasmann-Deilmann.
Nygaia: The substrate of the future for hydroponic systems and innovative nurseries
Get to know our substrate solution of the future: Nygaia. This is a new substrate developed as part of the partnership between Maan Biobased Products and Klasmann-Deilmann. The fibre consists of 60%
natural, bio-based raw materials and is completely biodegradable, meaning it produces no waste or microplastics.
Nygaia is inert, salt-free and has a remarkable water retention capacity. In addition, it offers a very good air capacity that optimally supports healthy root growth. This innovation is a big deal, especially in the cultivation of leafy vegetables in hydroponics and vertical growing systems. Take a close look at Nygaia at our stand.
The Growcoon: now also for pot-free bedding plants, perennials and potted herbs
The Growcoon has proven itself countless times as an innovative propagation system for many crops and applications in trays. Now, Klasmann-Deilmann is also presenting the Growcoon at IPM as a potless
cultivation solution to reduce plastic waste in the nursery. In addition to the small plugs for propagation trays, Growcoon is also available in larger sizes and is also suitable for growing bedding plants or perennials in small pots and even for potted herbs in 1 litre pots. This means that the plants can be sold and planted out directly together with the Growcoon without having to remove and dispose of the plastic pots.
The Growcoon is a fully biodegradable new growing solution with an open mesh structure based on polymer technology and it can be used with automatic dispenser systems.
At the Klasmann-Deilmann stand, visitors will have the opportunity to take a direct look at these new applications and discuss their potential uses.
