Tozer, a leading UK-based vegetable breeding firm, is set to participate in the annual Dutch International open days for the first time. The Seed Meets Technology event provides vegetable growing companies with an opportunity to showcase their breeding innovations and cutting-edge technologies. Tozer’s field trials will be showcasing over 80 varieties of crops, including celery, parsnip, coriander, rocket, and various types of kale, on a plot of more than 1000m². The event will take place from 26th to 28th September 2023.
Exciting New Varieties Showcased in Tozer’s Trial
Tozer’s latest celery varieties are a highlight of the trial, with breeding priorities aimed at yield, disease resistance, field holding ability, resistance to bolting, and rich flavour. TZ 7562 F1 features
a uniform, dark green stem suitable for pre-pack, while TZ 7047 Marcus F1 has uniformly attractive green stems, perfect for whole plant sales. Both boast high yields.
Tozer’s parsnips are also improved hybrids, with a focus on uniformity of size and shape, canker resistance, and vigour. Parsnip TZ 5151/Sabre F1 is an improved Viking F1, with whiter roots, better uniformity, and good storage. Meanwhile, TZ 7508 F1, features a uniform, well-formed root with white skin and an extended shelf life.
Leeks are another area of focus for Tozer, with plants which are easy to peel, with bulb-free shanks and dark green leaves. Oxford F1 features long, uniform shafts suitable for pre-pack and fresh markets in the autumn. Exeter F1 is a medium-early leek with strong features such as high vigour, strong leaf colour, and uniformity, making it ideal for pre-pack sales.
Also on display at the trial are Tozer’s new and improved hybrid varieties of kale – cavolo nero: Raven, Mamba, Cobra, and Ebony. Each of these new varieties has been carefully chosen for improved uniformity and more predictable, yet higher yields.
Finally, the trial features two types of leaf crops, Coriander, and Rocket. Coriander TZ 8296/Bolero boasts yields with high bolt tolerance, which extends the harvesting period. The plant’s upright shape makes it easier to harvest. TZ 9210 is a Calypso type with greater bolt tolerance and an excellent shelf life. Meanwhile, Wild Rocket TZ 5622, is a leaf crop with excellent mildew tolerance and strong vigour. Finally, TZ 8293/Odyssey is a dark green, deeply incised leaf perfect for summer cultivtozeration, with improved resistance to mildew and Fusarium.
