NIAB is a leading UK centre for plant science, crop evaluation and agronomy, delivering work from its regional network and headquarters in Cambridge.
Our crop research and science-based impartial information is used widely by the agricultural and horticultural community both nationally and internationally.
NIAB wishes to appoint a Farm Manager at our horticultural research centre of excellence at East Malling in Kent, to oversee the diverse research & development plantings across our soft fruit, top fruit and arable crops.
At this world-leading research facility the appointee will form close working relationships with research staff to successfully implement and deliver public- and industry-funded projects. This will involve managing a wide range of activities, including precision crop husbandry, sourcing and management of a team of seasonal casuals, crop planning, machinery maintenance, spraying, pruning, agronomy, fruit sales and farm accreditation.
The successful applicant will have a proven track record in the horticultural sector, be a forward thinker, a good communicator with staff management experience and be excited at the prospect of taking forward the research crop husbandry at this world-renowned site. You should be able to operate agriculture/horticultural machinery and have a competence certificate in tractor and forklift driving is desirable. Ideally, you will be NRoSo registered and hold at least some of the following: City and Guilds PA1, PA2, PA3 and PA6. Training can be provided, with further opportunities for progression within the company.
Applicants must be able to commit to a flexible work schedule with some extended and non-social hours as well as possible weekend work. Strong interpersonal, organizational and leadership skills are essential.
