Marks and Spencer will be putting this new variety – Kent Pink Umami – on the market at the beginning of June. This medium-sized tomato is pink rather than red and unusually tastes both sweet and sour thanks to its oriental seed heritage from Japan. M&S carried out trials last summer with several growers before they selected the grower from Birchington in Kent.
Adam Whitehead, M&S tomato buyer, told the Daily Mail: “This unique tomato gives customers a unique sour and savoury taste experience – it’s both more savoury and more sour than a normal tomato. In Japanese Umami means “pleasant savoury taste”.
