Stockbridge Technology Centre’s new High Wire facility was officially opened last week by the R. Hon. Michael Jack CBE. The specially raised glasshouse, equipped to test the feasibility of growing tomatoes under L.E.D. lighting during the winter months is trialing plants under four different lighting conditions to test for flavour, nutritional value, texture and appearance.
The plants, a midi-plum variety called Sunstream were planted last October and have been continually harvested since before Christmas. Marketed under the ‘Yorkshire Tomatoes’ brand, the fruit is being sold to Yorkshire chefs and the general public via top-end local food outlets. A full report will be published in the March issue of The Commercial Greenhouse Grower magazine. For your copy contact Andrea on 01622 695656 or email andrea@actpub.co.uk
