To quote one of the visitors to Seed meets Technology, this is ‘a trade fair that seamlessly ties in with the needs and wishes of everyone somehow involved in the seed industry’. The eighth edition of this successful event, which once again drew huge visitor numbers, has come just to a close. The presentation of new technology and varieties alongside a programme of lectures and symposiums is a unique formula that attracted business enterprises in the seed industry from both the Netherlands and abroad.
This year’s programme of lectures and symposiums was more extensive than ever, various companies gave lectures discussing their products and services and visitors were also treated to a demonstration by Corvus Drones, in which a drone flew through a greenhouse while collecting crop data.
Three complementary symposiums were presented by three companies:
- On Tuesday, ‘Seeds go digital’ featured speakers from Wageningen University, SeQso (a manufacturer of grading and analysis machines) and Videometer (a supplier of visual analysis machines), who gave presentations on how seeds are examined using various Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques.
- ‘Drones; the new human eyes in horticulture’, held on Wednesday, was presented by research organisation Vito Belgium, drone supplier Corvus Drones and plant nursery Gitzels, and discussed the role played by drones in the agricultural sector.
- ‘Seed treatments and treated seeds: future-proof’ was delivered by Euroseeds, Plantum and Artemis who provided an explanation and updates on the new laws and regulations currently facing the seed industry.
Seed companiesTakii Europe’s demonstration field, which could also be visited under supervision, was located adjacent the restaurant, where visitors could enjoy a beautiful view of the fields, on which dozens of crops were grown, along with their meals.
Sakata’s trial field was located on the other side of the site, here, a wide range of pumpkins and squashes – from spaghetti and kabocha squashes to Hokkaido and Halloween pumpkins – were on display. There was also a new microwave pumpkin on exhibit, which proved to be a genuine delicacy.
