Vitacress welcomed TV crews into its new state of the art herb nursery in Runcton, for a feature on the shelf life of fresh herbs for Channel 4’s Food Unwrapped programme, which aired on TV screens on 22nd May 2017.
The show’s presenter, Matt Tebbutt, headed to Sussex earlier this year to have a tour of the nursery, which has 2.4 million herbs growing on site at any one time, by Vitacress Herbs’ Production Director Chris Moncrieff.
The show looked at the rise in popularity of fresh herbs and how fresh herbs are grown in the UK today. Chris explained that 27 years ago, the company were producing around 3,000 pots of fresh herbs a week but since the rise of TV chefs using fresh herbs in their recipes, they are now producing 50,000 pots of fresh herbs a day. Last year it was estimated that £80billion worth of herbs were bought in the UK alone, more than a quarter of which were living plants, reinforcing the nations love of fresh herbs.
Vitacress is currently running a consumer marketing campaign that shows how fresh herbs can add a little ‘wow’ to your cooking and are working with chef and MasterChef champion, Tim Anderson, the award winning lifestyle blogger Em Sheldon, and the UK’s leading herb expert, Jekka McVicar, as ambassadors for the campaign. The campaign website is www.lovefreshherbs.co.uk.
Food Unwrapped airs on Channel 4 on Mondays at 8pm and reveals the truth about everyday foods. The episode featuring Vitacress can be viewed online at http://www.channel4.com/programmes/food-unwrapped.
