APS Salads on the Isle of Wight are going to install four 12 cylinder Rolls Royce Bergen gas-fuelled engines as part of a combined heat and power (CHP) system, in order to generate electricity for the greenhouses as well as being fed into the National Grid.
The exhaust from the engines will be “scrubbed” by a catalyst to remove pollutants and the cleaned-up carbon dioxide (CO2) gas will be pumped into the greenhouses to help tomato growth. Each engine will produce 5,605 kW of electrical power and 6,415 kW of heat. Matthias Vogel from Rolls Royce Power Systems, said: “Working with P3P Partners we’ve developed a generation concept that will increase the crop yield at APS while reducing the impact on the environment”. 50 similar CHP systems have been installed by Rolls Royce around the world.
