The area of vegetables including potatoes grown organically increased by 3.6% to 9,800ha in 2021, of which 1,000ha was in conversion to the system, according to Defra statistics released in May.
The area has increased for the third year in a row but has yet to recover to its peak, of 19,800ha, recorded in 2008.
Of the total organic area, 8,300ha was down to vegetables, representing 7.4% of all UK vegetable production; and 1,600ha was in potatoes, representing 1.2% of UK potato production.
The Soil Association said the expansion is expected to continue in 2022 in England at least after the government announced earlier this year it would pay up to double the previous support rates to growers in England who convert to organic.
