Camden Town Brewery in London has teamed up with social enterprise GrowUp Community Farms to help promote urban farming.
As part of the scheme, the brewery has partnered with Rootlabs to build a new vertical farm at the Enfield brew house to grow strawberries which the company says will be used in future batches of its Strawberry Hells Forever beer, with 20p from every can going to GrowUp Community Farms.
The 200 plants are being grown in pouches on a fence at the brewery, but have been planted too late to be used in this year’s beer production. Jasper Cuppaidge, founder and chief executive of Camden Town Brewery, told the Evening Standard, “We’re going to learn how we can make the future of brewing more sustainable, by sustainably growing our own strawberries. We are built on a very small site. Space [in London] is at a premium. It makes sense to use space that we are not using. If we can go vertical, let’s do that.”
