The number of deaths and injuries on British farms involving incidents with moving vehicles is the reason for a new campaign launched in March by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
It wants farmers to consider three areas of activities – keeping people and vehicles apart; safer driving; and vehicle maintenance – before they start their routine each day.
‘Farm safety doesn’t need to be difficult or expensive,’ HSE said. ‘Follow our ‘safe farm, safe driver, safe vehicle’ advice to help you plan the job and complete it safely.’
In the past five years 48 people have been killed in incidents involving vehicles, accounting for 30% of all fatal injuries in agriculture.
