BerryWorld’s latest packaging innovation was awarded a gold medal at The Grocer New Product & Packaging Awards 2024. The 100% recycled and recyclable pack, which became Ultimate Champion in the Composite Pack of the Year category, was described by the jury as “the future of packaging,” reflecting a “careful selection process by the supplier to select materials that deliver for both consumers and retailers”.
The award-winning pack, made with 100% recycled plastic punnets and a FSC accredited, paper-based lidding top, became the winner in the category which celebrates innovative packaging made with a combination of materials. The pack, which was first launched with Ocado Retail as a summer trial earlier this year, is fully recyclable as well, making it simple for shoppers to separate their paper top and plastic base and recycle them at home.
Stefan Rusev, Technical Director at BerryWorld UK explained, “This development has been such an exciting step for our business. In partnership with our paper-based lidding film supplier, and our plastics manufacturer, on this trial we introduced a category-first paper-based lidding and moved from 80% rPET content in our punnet bases to 100% as we continue to invest in the long-term sustainability of our branded packaging. This move aligns with our ongoing sustainability strategy to maximise the amount of recycled content in our packs going forward”.
Paul Avery, Commercial Director at BerryWorld UK, added: “We are honoured to receive this award from The Grocer New Product & Packaging Awards jury. This is a testament to our commitment to bring continued innovation to the berry category, not only with the most delicious award-winning berries but also with the most innovative and sustainable packaging”.
