Gotham’s Greens started in 2009 as a pioneer in the expanding urban agricultural industry using hydroponic growing systems. They built their first rooftop greenhouse in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, USA. Early last year, they opened their second on the roof of Whole Food Market’s flagship Brooklyn store. Gotham’s operates over 35,000 sq ft of greenhouse and grows over 300 tonnes of fresh salad greens and herbs annually for the NYC market. The third and fourth greenhouses are planned to open this year – Queens, New York (60,000 sq ft) and Chicago (75,000 sq ft). There is a huge saving in transport costs as the growing area is only a short lift journey to the retail point as well as a reduction in the use of fossil fuels.
