A new ‘participatory’ app for smart phones aims to help growers protect their plant and pests against insect pests by logging and tracking real-time pest movements.
The Geoinsecta app from Bioline is available for free for both Android and iPhone and will provide logged-in uses with real-time alerts when specified pests are seen in their area. An interactive map allows users to see how infestations evolve spatially and over time. A reporting feature allows users to send their own alerts to other nearby users.
Initially launched to track the European boxworm (Cydalima perspectalis), with the help of the app, you can spot pests such as the buxus tree moth, corn borer, and 3 types of vineyard borer. The developers say that more pests will be added shortly.
