It may not be a typical price, but the very first bunch of English asparagus grown for the 2015 season has raised £181 in a charity auction.
The bunch of spears grown under covers by Herefordshire-based Wye Valley Asparagus was sold just in time for St Valentine’s Day, with Hix Restaurants winning the bidding. Proceeds were donated to St Michaels Hospice in Hereford.
Although the main season will not start until April, Wye Valley Asparagus also sent bunches of the first crop to other recipients, including Marks and Spencer’s store in Marble Arch, London.
